Fighter Pilot over Italy

Recommended Posts

That is another great item and one that any collectors of the Luftwaffe would love. Those Flugbuch entries really add that extra something and adds meat to the bones.

I think the EK II entry is signed by Walter Seiz, a fighter ace with at least 14 kills.

This site has a list of JG-53 victories... JG-53

Michael, that is a very nice Jagdflieger set and just ripe for a detailed research piece to be written.

Do you have the Jagdgeschwader 53 trilogy written by Jochen Prein? if you do not I strongly suggest that you might take a look as the level of detail is quite amazing and 'your' man may well be mentioned inside (I do not have all of my books here with me right now, otherwise I would of had a look myself for you).

Either way, a cracking set and as already mentioned, a very nice Soldbuch photograph complete with FFS clearly shown.

Regards Richard.

Wow Ian - thanks a lot! This additional info is most valuable to me!

The kills in your list are only a partial match to his flugbücher. It seems he actually claimed less but I have decided to ignore this and just consider him a pilot with some kills

I particularly like that he is pictured in the book. This is never certain even for a long time member - I have seen the strangest gaps in reference books. But his square face is clearly recognizable and to have a picture of him as pilot is just fantastic.

Michael,

Thanks very much for that. Looks like he fell victim to No. 43 Squadron on the afternoon of 2 November 1943. That Allied unit flew a sweep to Frosinone between 15:00 and 16:00, and claimed two Bf 109s destroyed (the I. Gruppe of Jagdgeschwader 77 was also involved in the melee).

For the 28 November 1943 mission where he notes contact with three Spitfires, the I. Gruppe of Jagdgeschwader 53 was escorting Focke-Wulf 190 fighter-bombers of II./Schlachtgeschwader 4, and the German formation encountered four Spitfires of No. 1 SAAF Squadron. The fighter-bomber pilots downed a Spitfire, and lost at least one of their own.

Cheers,
Andrew A.

Thanks Andrew! Very interesting for me. Like I said, you Luft guys know what you are doing. There were entire Infanterie Divisionen with thousands of men fighting on the Eastern Front for years and it is hardly possible to to find out where they were or what they did. But you can track every step of those pilots! This is really helpful!
