Need help identiying Helmet

Recommended Posts

I've had this helmet for many years but have not yet properly identified it.
I assume the R is for Rescue but do not understand why is coloured white. I do not know what the two bars are under the R (marked front and rear). There is little to go on with inscriptions. All I can make out is 'VI' by the chinstrap lug. If there was anything else it is obliterated by rust.
Can anyone shed any more light on this?
Thank you.

Yes, R, for rescue, being white for an rescue party foreman.

The two small black horizontal bars are unusual, but there was a lot of different markings when it comes to home front helmets.

They could have been just perculiar to that one area.

Helmet is most likely dated 38/39.

This one's on Ebay as we speak...so this is all probably too late.....but as Mr Lid says, it could simply be a local arrangement where a particular region / team did their own thing.

Bars were used to identify some ranks during AND after the war.....but not usually on helmets. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a post-war re-used wartime Rescue Officers helmet
