Oberst Bernd Wintzer - Stab/FAR5

Recommended Posts

Allready showed this one on other forums, but it might interest people to see this one here also.

This is one of my nicest SB's I have of the 5th FJD, its the SB of the Fallschirm-Artillerie-Regiment 5 commander, Oberst Bernd Wintzer.

Lexikon der Wehrmacht lists him as being the commander of the regiment from April 1944, but thanks to the SB we can tell that he went to the FAR5 during the Ardennes offensive.

And as many others in the division, he went from the Luftwaffe air forces to the FJ ground troops.

I unfortunally couldn't find out who was in charge of the FAR5 before him, but it could well be so that the regiment started the Ardennes offensive without a commander.

He stayed in command through the early months of 1945, even though the regiment had almost no artillery pieces left. In March 1945 all that was left was a handfull of 10,5cm howitsers and a couple of 21cm Nebelwerfers, which after the American effort against Prüm resultet in even more losses. Nonetheless he stayed in command during this time and was probably captured near Nürnburgring in mid-March 1945.

Remarkable of the Soldbuch is that his picture is on the back of the booklet, and not in front.

Also I find his handwritting very beautiful.

Several awards, but not very high ones, which you may expect from an Regiment commander.

Kind regards

Nick

It never ceases to amaze me how the Germans, and more accurately the Luftwaffe, would assign an officer to command a field unit which was far removed from his previous area of expertise. Here we have an officer with extensive experience in aerial reconaissance units and he winds up in an paratrooper artillery unit! It strikes me as similar to Friedrich Alpers who commanded 3.(F)/Aufkl,Gruppe 121 & Fernaufkl.Gruppe 4 and yet come September 1944 he is captured while commanding Fallschirmjäger Rgt 9 in Normandy.

Very nice SB though and I can see why you are pleased to have it.

Hi Nick,

Very nice and interesting pay book, I have a resembling to the Fallschirm Flak Abteilung 5.

Parachute-Flak-Abteilung 5:

Formed 1.44 at Reims with 5 batteries, and was destroyed in Normandy. Reformed 11.44 in Holland.

In 1945, apparently II / Flak-Regiment 6, and was reformed from III.

best greetings Marcel,

Thank you both for the kind replies.

Marcel, I believe the Fallschirm Flak Abteilung 5 was almost entirely destroyed near the Vianden Brückenkopf in early 1945.

Do you have any paperwork of this unit? If so, I would be interested to see.

Kind regards

Nick
