Hi Sven,

Nice idea for a topic. I haven't got Sascha Weber's book yet (it's on my soon-to-get list that is waaay too long...), but look forward to adding it to my library in the not too distant future. Since i haven't got the book i don't know what info is in it, but to add to this nice topic here are some interesting pictures regarding this award.

The artist and designer of the Ost-medaille was Ernst Krause, he was a member of the Waffen-SS and was a SS-Kriegsberichter.

An interesting fact about the ribbon, is that it's colours symbolize the situation at the Eastfront:

- Red fr blood

- White for winter snow

- Black for mourning for the fallen

Here are two pictures of Ernst Krause. On the first one he is working on a large plaster design of the medal. The second shows him in his SS uniform. Both pictures are from the long out of print book by K.G. Klietman - Auszeichnungen des Deutschen reiches 1936-1945. I can advice anyone to get this book, it can be found on ebay for not too much money and although it's an older referencework it contains a lot of good information.

Best regards,

Gaston

Hello Gaston,

thanks for your reply, the information and the pictures!!!

The book of Sascha Weber about the eastern front medal is very good in my opinion and a "Must Have" if you are really interested in this topic. Also the other mentioned book is very good in my opinion if you want to get an overview about all the awards of the german Heer and a deeper insight in the production of these awards.

The information about the designer and and explanation of the ribbon colours is written in the books if I remember correct. I just didn't write it here, because I've just asked the authors for authorization to write the maker lists.

About the Auszeichnungen des Deutschen reiches 1936-1945 by K.G. Klietman I've already heart, but I don't have it yet. I wanted to buy it, but the cheap versions you can buy is just a reprint of the third edition. If you want the newest one (fourth edition) you have to buy the reprint of Hüsken and that's a little bit more expensive.

Best regards

Sven

Hi guys,

I thought it would be nice to post all the different eastern front medals in this thread. If you have a nice medal or maybe a complete set it would be nice if you post it here. Furthermore it would be good if a mod could sort the medals according to the maker list.

Best regards

Sven
