Ribbon bar (Help to ID: generals, colonels...)

It really is hard to be sure exactly what it is. Shadows are skewing even the makeup of the ribbon colours/design.

Emden is an example, but his career might give some insight to foreign travel or links with foreign nations, etc.

Between two wars he only served as Watch-Officer on the Liner ‘Schwaben’ (28 Dec 1919-05 Feb 1920).

We do know he was awarded the Spanish Order of Naval Merit 2nd Class with White Decoration on 21 September 1934. But that's not the ribbon in question on the ribbon bar.

Well, it looks like it will stay a mystery.

Vizeadmiral Leopold Bürkner

First row:

- Eisernes Kreuz (1914) 2. Klasse (hidden)

- Kriegsverdienstkreuz (1939) 2. Klasse mit Schwertern (most likely)

- Herzoglich Anhaltisches Friedrich-Kreuz

- Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer

- Wehrmacht Dienstauszeichnung 1. Klasse

- Wehrmacht Dienstauszeichnung 3. Klasse

- Medaille zur Erinnerung an den 1. Oktober 1938 mit Spange "Prager Burg"

- Medaille zur Erinnerung an die Heimkehr des Memellandes

- ??? (some sort of device)

Second row:

- ??? (rosette device)

- Offizierskreuz des Königlichen Ordens der Krone von Italien ??? (awarded to Bürkner on 02 August 1935)

- ??? (rosette device)

- ???

- ???

- ???

- ??? (rosette device)

- ??? (black ribbon?)

- ??? (rosette device)

I pressume some of the unknown ribbons in the second row must be the following awards Bürkner was awarded:

Kommandeurkreuz des Königlich Ungarischen Verdienstordens (10. 08. 1938)

Offizierskreuz des Königlich Spanisch-Marrokanischen Mehdauia-Ordens

Kommandeurkreuz des Königlichen Ordens des Sterns von Rumänien mit Schwertern am Tapferkeitsbande der Militärischen Tugend (07. 11. 1941)

Finnischer Orden des Freiheitskreuzes 1. Klasse mit Schwertern (10. 12. 1941)

However, I don't know how to place them. Perhaps you do. You may also know what the other ribbons are. I already asked Gregg/Jaime his opinion, and I will let you know what he thinks after you write your guesses. Please also try and determine the Classes for the unknown ribbons.

Many thanks.

- Slovak Victory Cross

Second row:

- Bulgarian Military Merit Order

- Offizierskreuz des Königlichen Ordens der Krone von Italien

- Königlich Spanisch-Marrokanischen Mehdauia-Ordens

- ???

- ???

- ???

- Hungarian Merit Order, Commander Cross (probably)

- ??? (black ribbon?)

- Spanish Naval Merit Order (probably)

The 3 unknown in a row could be Spanish related, but hard to tell.

I am unsure of any class of the above.

Thank you Pierce. This is what Gregg added:

First row:

- Slovak Victory Cross (he said it could be the 3. Class perhaps?)

Second row:

- 5th ribbon from the left - Erinnerungsmedaille für die Verteidigung der Slowakei ???

Since you said the 3 unknown in a row could be Spanish related, my guess would be:

- Medalla de la Campaña de España (1936−1939) ??? (4th from the left)

- 5th from the left could then be the Königlich Spanischen Militär-Verdienstorden with Red Decoration ??? (if it's not the Slovakian award Gregg proposed)

I am surprised the Romanian and Finnish awards aren't mounted on the ribbon bar? We know for a fact Bürkner had them. Odd.

He may not have mounted them on this ribbon bar. We'll never know for sure unless a colour photo of the bar appears.

Bulgarian might be Commander grade, but as I say, I cannot guess the grades.

The 5th ribbon might have a coloured edge, which would rule out the Spanish Military merit Order in Red.

4th could be Spanish Commemorative Medal. It might be worth trying to find out his role in the Spanish Civil War. It could help with these particular queries.

Thank you Pierce, what about the guesses made by Gregg?

First row:

- Slovak Victory Cross (he said it could be the 3. Class perhaps?)

Second row:

- 5th ribbon from the left - perhaps Erinnerungsmedaille für die Verteidigung der Slowakei ??? (instead of the Spanish Military Merit Order in Red?)

Regarding the 4th ribbon in the second row (Spanish Commemorative Medal), Bürkner served during the Spanish Civil War as the First Officer of the Armoured-Ship ‘Admiral Scheer’ (01 Oct 1935-26 Jul 1937) and was even Temporary-Commander of German Sea-Forces at Spain (14 Mar 1938-22 Mar 1938). We also know he was awarded the Spanish Cross in Silver with Swords and the Spanisch-Marrokanischen Mehdauia-Orden. In my opinion he must have been awarded the Spanish Commemorative Medal.

First Row:
Last ribbon is the Slovak Victory Cross. Again, I cannot comment on the class of award, but perhaps look up the grades and appropriate rank. I would guess he was awarded this in late 1939.

Second row:
4th ribbon- I agree- Spanish Commemorative Medal
5th ribbon- Erinnerungsmedaille für die Verteidigung der Slowakei is a possibility and could link in with the Victory Cross. I think you need to try and ascertain his role with the Slovaks in this period. I don't think it is the Spanish Merit Order in Red as I can see coloured edges on this ribbon which this Spanish ribbon does not have.

Regarding the link between Bürkner and the Slovaks. The first link is that we know for sure he was awarded the Slovak Victory Cross. The second link could be through his post as Chief of the Foreign Department, later Foreign-Office-Group in the Foreign-Office, OKW (15 Jun 1938-30 Jun 1944), which would undoubtedly link him with all Axis Allies of the Third Reich in some way.

It's possibly KVK without swords? It's hard to tell. It's not a WW1 award as the RL has what's above.

Happy New Year to you also.

I think this photo shows the addition of the Eastern Front Medal. Again, hard to be accurate.

There is nothing else listed in the Rank List. Perhaps it could be the Württemberg Friedrich Order?

I am of the same opinion. I would say it is the Ritterkreuz 1. Klasse mit Schwertern des Königl. Württembg. Friedrichs-Orden.

Thanks, Pierce!
