On looking again I do believe you are right! I have seen a few other photos that show him wearing the Savoy Order. His ribbon bar also testifies to that, but no ribbon for the Order of SS Maurice and Lazarus!

From his own signed records, he did not list the Order of SS Maurice and Lazarus. BUT perhaps there is something in what you say because from the same records he lists the Order of Savoy TWICE, with two different award dates...both are Commander Grade. Perhaps a mistake and the other should be the Order of SS Maurice and Lazarus? Do we know if the Order of SS Maurice and Lazarus was awarded during the War?

I have more research to do on this particular point.

Hello Pierce. Did you find out if Donitz was awarded the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus? If he is indeed wearing it on the photo what class is it? The Grand Officer?

On my list of Donitz's awards I have the following Italian decorations:

-Knight's Cross of the Italian Military Order of Savoy (20 April 1940)

-Commander's Cross of the Italian Military Order of Savoy (7 November 1941)

If that indeed is the Grand Officer's Cross of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus I would like to add it to the database over on the Axis History Forum. Please confirm.

Thanks

To me it is the Commander's Cross of the Italian Military Order of Savoy.

If anything, it is the Commanders Cross NOT Grand Officer grade.

So perhaps he was award the Knight's Cross first (low grade for his rank though??) and then a year later the Commander Cross.

This is one Italian Order that was not just handed out so low grades for high ranked officers is nothing unusual in my opinion.

I'm sorry. Are you talking about the Military Order of Savoy or the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus?

I want to know if Donitz recieved the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, or more specifically what is the neck order he is wearing on the photo. Commander Grade you say.

It could be the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus. It has more rounded arms and I don't see the wreath that is on the Savoy Order. What do you think yourself?

To me it looks like the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus. If you look closely you can see there is no circle in the middle of the award like on the Military Order of Savoy. I also can't see the wreath. See the photo comparison below. What do you think?

I would garner more opinion, but my vote is for SS Maurice & Lazarus.

The Order of Savoy was listed on his list of awards.

Another photo of Donitz wearing the Italian decoration around the neck.

On GMIC forum I was told that on the first photo I posted few days ago Donitz is wearing the Commander's Cross of the Miltiary Order of Savoy.

Does this second photo confirm the Order of Savoy? Can we concluded it is not the Order of SS Maurice and Lazarus?
