Society of Ancient Mariners. What do I have ?

Recommended Posts

Wasn't sure where to post this. I have had this badge for a while. Made from 925 silver with a gilt and enamel finish. Maker marked S.A.M.

I have searched the internet but with no luck. So does anyone know anything about the Society of Ancient Mariners ?

Also marked First Sea Lord.

Thank you.

Graham.

The membership by and large consists of curmudgeons, scoundrels, scalliwags, ruffians or ner'do wells, who continue to boldly explore despite not knowing what they are looking for. :w00t:

Yes Dave, so it would seem. And the society seems to have a keen sense of humour

The makers mark is South Africa Mint. [pre 1941]

Thanks.

Graham.

Eric.                                                                                                                                                                                                    Dave's quote is taken from the web site of the society of Ancient Mariners. It is a tongue in cheek reference to its own members.

Some information has come my way from a new member of this forum who has sent me a PM.

It would seem the Society of Ancient Mariners sold 'pins' to raise funds during ww2. The sellers were awarded a badge in varying grades depending on the number of pins they had sold.

First Sea Lord being the highest grade for selling the maximum amount of pins.

The grades were as follows.

Able Seaman

Petty officer

Commander

Admiral

First Sea Lord.

Thanks Anthony.

Thanks for the reply to this old post Anthony.  I had not seen the other badges before. A very different format to the First Sea Lord badge.

Graham.
